  • Oliver became friends with David Whitmer while he was teaching school and living with the Smiths.[1]
  • Oliver was Joseph Smith's second scribe in translating the Book of Mormon, which started on April 7, 1829.[2]
  • In June 1829, Oliver, along with Martin Harris and David, was shown the golden plates near the Whitmer home in Fayette Township.[2][3][4]
  • Oliver wrote a document called the "Articles of the Church of Christ". Joseph later wrote a second document titled "Articles and Covenants of the Church of Christ," which was accepted by the Church during the June 1830 conference.[5]
  • In September 1830, Oliver was given two assignments:
    • Tell Hiram Page about his error concerning the supposed revelations he received from a stone.
    • To undertake a mission to the American Indians. Peter Whitmer Jr. was called to accompany him. (Due to an order by a federal agent, he was eventually expelled from Indian Territory)[5][6]
  • In November 1831, Oliver (along with Sidney Rigdon and William McLellin) were originally assigned to write a preface to the Book of Commandments.[7]
