- Martin and his first wife, Lucy Harris, were first cousins.
- Martin hired Joseph Smith as a day laborer on his farm.[1]
- Martin was Joseph's first scribe in translating the Book of Mormon in the spring and early summer of 1828 until he lost 116 pages of the manuscript.[1][2]
- In June 1829, Martin, along with Oliver Cowdery and David Whitmer, was shown the golden plates near the Whitmer farm in Fayette Township and would be known through all eternity as The Three Witnesses.[1][3][4]
